TECH CHECK

Audio quality matters most

Good audio makes it easier for the audience to stay focused on what you're saying.

🎙

Microphone & headphones

  • Use an external USB microphone if available (examples include Blue Yeti, RØDE NT-USB, or Samson Q2U).
  • Wear headphones or earbuds to prevent echo.
  • Avoid speakerphone and laptop microphones where possible.
  • Avoid noisy Bluetooth earbuds or AirPods in loud environments.
🔇

Room and background noise

  • Choose a quiet room and close windows and doors.
  • Turn off fans or noisy appliances where possible.
  • Silence phone and computer notifications.
  • Soft furnishings such as curtains, carpet, or a couch can reduce echo.
  • Ask others not to interrupt; keep pets out of the recording area if possible.
🎥

Camera, lighting & appearance

  • Set the camera at eye level and look toward the camera while speaking.
  • A clean laptop webcam is fine if the image is clear.
  • Face a window or light source; avoid a bright window behind you.
  • Choose a simple, uncluttered background.
  • Wear solid, camera-friendly colors and avoid busy patterns.
🌐

Internet and setup

  • Use a stable internet connection.
  • Close unnecessary apps and browser tabs.
  • Restart your computer beforehand if needed.
  • Join about five minutes early for the audio and video check.
  • Let everyone nearby know you are recording and use Do Not Disturb.
KEEP IT CONVERSATIONAL

Prepare lightly, then be present

You do not need to memorize answers, prepare slides, or be perfect. Read the conversation starters, think about what listeners should take away, and keep a little water nearby.

  • If you make a mistake, pause, repeat the corrected thought, and continue.
  • Have a short description of what you do and a clear takeaway ready.
  • Do a quick hair and clothing check; aim for camera-ready, not perfect.
  • Keep the episode evergreen: avoid relying on specific dates, times, prices, or locations that may quickly become outdated.
  • Use examples and stories you have permission to share.
